That Anti-Abortion Harriet Miers on Choice and Total Freedom for Women

Via commenter Andrew comes a link to a story about Harriet Miers’s meeting with Chuck Schumer, titled When Harriet met Chuck. The piece ends with a quote from transcripts of a 1992 ABA meeting, in which Miers “said she understood why abortion rights’ advocates were so vehement”:

When you understand, as I do, that the choice issue is inextricably entwined with the debate of total freedom for women, for empowerment, you fully understand the depth of caring and emotion which accompany the efforts like those in support of this resolution.

I can easily see such language as a central part of a badly written opinion explaining why, despite one’s personal opposition to Roe, it and Casey must be upheld due to stare decisis.

But there is nothing to see here. Move along, people. Move along.

  1. His Bubbleness is sending out mixed messages about Mier’s opinion on Roe.

This is how the ploy is supposed to work: The Right is supposed to believe the evidence of her opposition to Roe. On the other hand, the evidence to the contrary (wink, wink) is just a smokescreen to prevent charges of a litmus test from the Left.

    ‘Makes sense to me now.

  3. I don’t want to approve Meiers because we get some under the table assurance that she will uphold Roe. That’s how liberals do things. Screw the law, we want our policies. That’s Roe in a nutshell to start with. I want someone who upholds the law regardless of her beliefs. I want the frenchfry judge.

But her comment could equally have been a bit of Clintonian, “I feel your pain” to cover a ruling that goes the other way.

    I just don’t want her.
