Recommended Lieder Recording
I recently picked up the remastered EMI recording of Brahms’s Deutsche Volkslieder with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Great stuff, and quite inexpensive for two discs. My current favorite piece is “Wie Komm’ Ich Denn Zur Tur Herein?” Highly recommended.
You know, I never asked if you checked out any of those jazz recordings I recommended to you so long ago…
Dean Esmay (0e0491) — 10/2/2005 @ 12:02 amI got a Billie Holiday recording, though I think not the exact one you had recommended. I listened to it a couple of times and wasn’t wowed, but I want to give it a few more listens.
What I *did* enjoy, quite a bit, was a John Coltrane and Duke Ellington collaboration, which I think you had recommended. The first track especially grabbed me.
Patterico (4e4b70) — 10/2/2005 @ 12:16 amI usually buy classical music based on the composer and not the artist or director (sometimes a particular ensemble might grab me), but a few years back I picked up a CD of Fischer-Dieskau singing Bach and Buxtehude that was really amazing. I’ll definitely be looking for him.
See Dubya (c01825) — 10/2/2005 @ 6:23 amIs there a mail-order source for DVDs and Cds that you or your readers can recommend? I am normally limited to Amazon.de because of shipping costs (and because Swiss customs are diligent about extracting their francs), but for a really good work, I’ll gladly pay the extra cost.
Pigilito (31331f) — 10/2/2005 @ 7:08 amSchwartzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau are two of the best lieder singers in history. F-D renewed the great German lieder tradition and was followed by many other singers including the excellent Hermann Prey.
Here’s a great synopsis of his career. The Guardian doing somethin good, for a change.
