Random Conversation with My Two-Year-Old Son Matthew in the Car, 1

To understand this, you have to understand that I sometimes try to get my kids to say silly nonsense phrases, which is what I was doing as the conversation started:

Me: You say: “Bust a move, yo!”

Matthew: No.

Me: You say: “Boy-a-Busybee.”

Matthew: No.

Me: You say: “My name is Matthew.”

Matthew: No.

Me: You say: “No.”

Matthew: No.

Me: Good job! See? You said what I told you to say.

Matthew: That’s right. You tell me to say no and I will say no.

Me: Okay. You say: “No.”

Matthew: No.

Me:

Matthew: You say yes and I say no.

Me: You say stop and I say go go go.

Matthew:

Me:

Matthew: Stop.

Me: Go go go.

Then we laughed.

  1. Smarter, smaller, and in control.

I would keep him away from military schools, especially Brienne.

  2. Two? Then why doesn’t this conversation sound much different than several I’ve had with my teenagers, one now a college student, one in his twenties and the oldest almost thirty? From the mouths of babes …

Would that the congress would learn from your son the response to the question: “Should we spend more money”? Tell ’em Matthew.

  3. That’s really cute and nurturing, Patterico. I didn’t know you had it in you. 😉

I also note with admiration that you are an apparent Beatles fan, or you at least like Paul. (He’s a vegetarian, you know.)

  4. Wednesday Specials

Public Eye gets silly at the White House. The Therapist is more poignant than silly. Point Five is Moore silly than Kutcher. Patterico talks silly like a two-year-old. Michele plays her silly word games. If you have a special you…

  5. Matthew displays some of the same characteristics Patterico did at the same age, now this can be both good or bad – depending on your perspctive. For instance, once Matthew learns this “game” can in fact drive his Dad insane, well then all bets will be off and let the dueling begin!! My problem was Patterico at 2 was smarter than I was at 16 – so I lost most of those “duels”!! LOL!
    Hello, Goodbye.

  6. I don’t know why you say Goodbye…?

    Tom (eb6b88)

  7. I say Hello?

    Sweetie (f6fb72)

  8. Imagine all the people . . .

    Pejman Yousefzadeh (2b60f1)

  9. Patterico, this story is one of the many reasons I dig your blog. I also enjoyed your story about your daughter’s reaction to the inappropriate outburst while your wife watched “Son of Sam.”

Don’t know if your boy is into cartoons, but there is an awesome version of “Hello, Goodbye” done by Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck.
