President Specter???

Our worst fears have been realized. Senator Arlen Specter has been elected President!

What’s that you say? He hasn’t?

Then why the hell did he do this?

  1. “Then why the hell did he do this? ”

I’d say its certainly a sign that you are not the president when you ask the president to do something. Like I’m sure thousands do.

  2. The Romans had a saying: Nomen est Oman, it means that your name is an omen.

A “specter” is a ghost which haunts or perturbs the mind.

Arlen Specter, never forget, was the Warren Commission lawyer who came up with the “magic bullet” theory. He’s been an instrument for deception for over 40 years. It was beyond stupid to let him chair the Judiciary Committee, and soon our chickens will come home to roost.

I’ll make a prediction. Arlen Specter will do his best to torpedo President Bush’s nominee to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. I hope I’m wrong, but I smell a rat.

  3. I think it was a bit presumptuous for him to approach Justice O’Connor and ask her how she would feel about staying on.

Presumptuous of what? You can expect the president to worry about that when he is asked to delay. I wouldn’t be surprised if O’connor has been receiving mail asking her to stay on.

  5. So by reading Stuart’s post, it seems Specter is concerned about Roberts, and fears… what? The death of Roe if a conservative replaces O’Connor? Apparently so.

So what does this mean when Bush (presumably) nominates a conservative for Associate Justice? Will Specter demand more assurances on Roe than he did with Roberts? Looks that way. Is he clearing the way to vote against the next nominee based on Roe? I am guessing that he is.

I am not sure what a tie in committee means, but I assume it will not bode well for a filibuster challenge (assuming I am correct that Supreme Court nominees would be discharged to the floor anyway in case of a tie).

The pro-abortion faction of the Senate could very well decide to band together and create a virtually indestructable alliance with a straightforward litmus test. It would require the pro-Roe Republicans to take a stand, but would allow the Democrats to sit back and watch the Republican party split apart over abortion politics.

Too ugly to happen? I sure hope so, but pro-abortion politicians could see Roe as being absolutely threatened. That might make them break with the party permanently while this condition exists.

  6. If I tell Arlen Specter to get a life, am I a Senator?

  7. If Specter really had the sort of clout he imagines himself to have, he wouldn’t have to go public with this sorta stuff in order to pressure Bush. Specter’s got power, alright, but apparently not enough to do what he wants.

  8. Those of us in Pennsylvania who are real Republicans were disappointed when Senator Specter beat Pat Toomey for the GOP senatorial nomination. We understood why President Bush and Senator Santorum backed Mr Specter, but wish it hadn’t been so.

But, you can’t blame me! I voted for Jim Clymer, the Constitution Party candidate!

So were those of us who were real democracts.

  10. Oh right, the “conservatives would lose” theory.

Tell me how that works in a state with a Senator Santorum?

Get back to me after the casey race.

  12. But if your theory held true, he shouldn’t even be an incumbent.

Then again, you also probably think things like Tim Kaine has a snowball’s chance in hell of being elected governor of Virginia, because Jerry Kilgore is very, very conservative and the outgoing governor Mark Warner is a democrat.

  13. “But if your theory held true, he shouldn’t even be an incumbent.”

Why is that? he wasn’t a pawn of the anti-national weather service crowd running againts a popular pro-lifer.

  14. Notice what your calculus there (and all, “Moderate Republicans get elected more” talk from Democrats)?

It’s an admission that 1) the voting public is more conservative on abortion than your party is and 2) the voting public as a whole is more conservative than your party is.

Now, that does not mean that they are also not more liberal than the Republican Party, but it does show that all the BS about the Democratic Party being in line with mainstream America is just that.

  15. Mainstream? The Democrat Party is all wet, but no where near the main streams of American political thought. The Dems are way out in left field with the likes of Howard Dean, Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Noam Chomsky, Al Sharpton, and Cynthia McKinney. MSM can’t control the flow of information any longer and Dems can’t define themselves as moderates or find cover for their extremist positions. That’s why they can’t win elections, their message is getting out, loud and clear.

Look at Air America for example. Al Franken and Randi Rhodes spew hate, blame President Bush for everything they can think of, and all the while scam funding from needy kids and sick old folks. It’s a microcosm of typical Democrat misbehavior. The usual cabal of crooks and liars on public display, hands in the till up to the elbow, and all the while expecting MSM to provide cover and even praise for their “good intentions.”

Dems are many, many, things, but mainstream ain’t one of them. Dems are yesterday’s news, they are lost in the swamp without a moral compass, isolated and adrift in the maze of tangled backwaters. It’s getting dark outside, and no one can hear their cries. RIP. Fade to dark.
