[...] Patterico has a great post from a couple of days ago, he explores one of Krugman’s columns where he asserts that the media recounts show that Al Gore should have won the 2000 election. Here’s a good summary of the post: Tom Maguire’s valiant efforts notwithstanding, I have yet to see a scenario under which Krugman can be fairly said to have represented truthfully the results of the 2001 undervote recount. If Maguire has truly found the basis of Paul Krugman’s statement, it merely reveals another scenario under which Krugman is being dishonest. Indeed, this scenario involves multiple new layers of Krugman dishonesty. You can peel that onion all night long and never finish the job. [...]

Patterico:

You have a coroner's stomach, re-autopsying a five-year-old corpse like that.

Subsequent events (Jeb's '02 landslide re-election) further validate the points you raise. Good show.

Let me propose another explanation that gives Krugman less credit. Our favorite columnist began this by saying that he had gotten his argument from a book by a British writer for the Independent. (Can't think of the writer's name offhand, but he wrote a defensive column on this controversy that I saw over at Lucianne's the other day. I found several glaring errors in the column, without much work.)

You seem to think that Krugman investigated this controversy himself. I think Krugman (or the graduate student who actually writes the column) just copied the mistakes made by the British writer, perhaps making them a little worse along the way.

Thanks for the info!

I have a pair of extremely lib friends, and in one of our discussions on the election, one of them dumped into the argument that "bags of votes had just been summarily tossed out".

I scoured the web trying to find out about it, and this is the first I've read in 3 years of searching that a) mentions anything concrete about it and b) actually details what kind of votes they were.

The recap on counting scenarios is also much appreciated. I'm always on the lookout for good debate fodder. Quite frankly, if people are still touting that Bush "stole" the election, then it's a good thing to keep the facts fresh.

I'm sorry. I just couldn't make it all the way through that.
I never, ever, ever want to read about, talk about or listen to anything that combines "Votes", "Dimples" and "Chad" unless Chad is voting for Dimples' nice body.

[Yeah, it's rough going. But it had to be done. I should do a short version for the benefit of the 99% of readers who understandably share your lack of patience with the subject matter and length of the post. -- Patterico]

Krugman's style reminds me of the joke about when a Ford raced a Russian Zil in 1950s Moscow. The Ford won the race by three laps, but Pravda reported: " Superior Russian technology and skill resulted in a second-place finish; while shoddy imperialist American automobile finished next to last."

I still say that Krugman, with his consistent ideological dishonesty, has rendered himself irrelevent. Much like Maureen Dowd. No one reads either one anymore to become informed - just for the amusement.
