  1. You know, this story really bothered me. I have a daughter and it seems to me what the Roberts did was simply dress their kids up in the best clothing they could. Isn’t that what any parent would do in those circumstances? For heaven’s sake they were appearing on national TV at the White House!

I bet they never thought the Washington Post would be running articles criticizing the way their KIDS are dressed. I mean…that’s just low. I thought the kids looked great and the family was well turned out.

  2. If the Post needs to criticize the children’s clothing to find something negative to say about Roberts…

  3. Dwilkers is spot-on. Who on earth wouldn’t want their children to look so well turned out, given the occasion and location?

Regarding the choice of clothes, the article noted that the “children are innocents”, as if something terrible had occurred.

As the father of two daughters, I take my hat off to the family for making the effort and choosing such tasteful outfits. God knows, I would like to see more children so well-dressing (especially my own) on important occaisions.

    What a poisonous article.

  4. Well Dressed and acting their ages – who in his/her right mind would complain. I enjoy it when the Bush girls show up with their father and it is a special day when Mary Chaney gets on stage with her dad. These are all parents who see their immortality in their offspring. I am proud of their pride.

  5. Someone has satirized (sorry – don’t remember who) that since Roberts drives a PT Cruiser he obviously wants to go back to the 30’s.
Robin Givhan is not trying to be funny when she talks about “syrupy nostalgia.”
In my mind that makes her (him?) someone to ignore forever, unless she atones by wearing an Easter bonnet to work.

  7. Who would imagine that the style section would write about the image people put out, and how they dress.

  8. It was a snarky attempt to make the Roberts family look backward. See, no matter how smart they are, they are conservative and that makes them dumb.
The clothes were just a device to an end.
To excuse such writing makes one an accomplice in bad manners.

You should see the treatment style gave the recently apprehended grafittist, BORF.

Meaning a critical — and rather unsuperficial — review in ‘style’ is certainly not just for conservatives. And if you want to see how they treat the people they actually think are dumb, rather than the ones self-conscious about it, you should become a regular reader. I often enjoy style much more than the front pages.

  12. It doesn’t matter. Anyone with even one shred of common decency would leave little pre-school kids out of it. Period.

I liked seeing the pictures of his kids. I was glad he didn’t leave them out of the announcement.

  14. The children were there for pictures to be taken, not to have their clothes ridiculed as part of an effort to bring their father down a peg or two.

A little restraint by the article’s author would have been nice.

The nicest outcome would be for seer-sucker blazers to make a come back.

I don’t think the children choose those clothes. I found it rather inescapable that the family looked just like my Brooks Brothers catalogue. I don’t see whats the matter in analyzing the image presented. I mean, everyone talked about the kid dancing. I thought it was pretty cute.

“The nicest outcome would be for seer-sucker blazers to make a come back.”

I think you have to be born in seer sucker to wear it. That and anything that shouldn’t be worn north of the mason dixon line shouldn’t be worn at all.
