News Analysis? Or Editorial?

Filed under: Dog Trainer — Patterico @ 12:00 pm

Honestly. Does labeling a piece “news analysis” really give the writer leeway to say this?

Bush has marched through his presidency championing causes held dear by one Republican Party faction or another — lawsuit limits sought by business, antiabortion measures pushed by religious conservatives, tax cuts favored by free-market advocates, immigration law changes appealing to Latinos — but the court seat opened by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s retirement is a prize valued by all parts of the party.

Put aside whether the sentence is true — which I think is highly debatable — and just look at the haughty tone.

“Marched”?

And this piece went through the editorial process??

  1. Well fascists do march, Patrick. At least they didn’t say “goose-stepped”.

This is yet another example of how the legacy media perceive these things. Bill Clinton kept his promises to his constituency, lived up to their ideals, and satisfied the public’s demands while George Bush throws red meat to his base, kowtows to conservatives, and bows to right-wing pressure. The only real difference is whether one agrees with the policies or not.

  2. They probably changed it from “smirked.” Probably also cut out the “invaded Iraq for Haliburton” reference.

Compared to their usual calumny, LAT’s use of “marched” falls into the category of small potatoes, it seems to me. It isn’t accurate, but it certainly isn’t something to get upset about. Loud public objections to such nearly insignificant matters could well be dredged up and used against you later to undermine some real outrage.

Snerk! The editor is probably the guy who added “marched” 😀

  6. There are real biases and deceptions in the press; we should focus on those… What’s wrong with “marched”?

  7. Exactly! Amazing how word choice reveals so much spin? Look at the stories surrounding the minuteman border patrol for a classic example. The LA times regularly refers to the volunteers as “gun toting” implying all are armed. It has been made clear that weapons of self defence were permitted but not mandatory by the group organizers.

I remind readers that if you were in a fascist state, you wouldn’t be able to spout your ignorance proclaming Bush as a fascist. A fact quickly overlooked by most on the left in favor of their next good sound byte.
