Osama: A Bad Guy, But Not as Bad as Tom DeLay

Howard Dean in 2004, on Osama bin Laden:

I’ve resisted pronouncing a sentence before guilt is found. I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best not to, in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials.

Howard Dean in 2005, on Tom DeLay:

I think he’s guilty . . . of taking trips paid for by lobbyists, and of campaign-finance violations during his manipulation of the Texas election process.

He couldn’t say Osama was guilty before a trial — but he can say a powerful Republican is.

That’s the guy whom Democrats have chosen to be the face of their party, folks. And a finer representative you won’t find.

  1. Trial would seem unlikely in the DeLay case, though, as he was investigated and reprimanded for three violations of ethics standards in the previous session. Breaking ethics laws doesn’t appear to result in trials, from previous experience.

  2. That’s because congressional ethics are bound by congressional rules, not laws.

But Radioactive Man — er, I mean Howlin’ Howard — is also alleging campaign-finance violations, which can result in trial, if a federal prosecutor found it worthwhile to seek an indictment.

Surely there’s a Clinton-appointed U.S. attorney somewhere who’d find it politically advantageous to be the one who takes down Tom DeLay. Assuming there’s, y’know, anything to take him down for.
