GOP Dithering on Judicial Nominees About to End

Captain Ed says Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen are out of committee. The showdown over the nuclear option appears imminent.

I had been thinking that the GOP was waiting for a Supreme Court nomination to unleash the big guns. I may have given GOP leaders too much credit. The Los Angeles Times reports that big business is wary of having the Senate shut down, because of all their priorities that might get put on hold. And Frist is worried about that.

Never mind that solid federal courts would be good for big business. The real point is that Frist and Co. have been dithering. Now that Brown and Owens are out of committee, that will have to change. And that’s a good thing.

  1. Tell the R’s “We’re going to force honest filibusters. Get your affairs in order.”

Then just do it. The ‘Constitutional Option’ isn’t really even necessary, because the D’s would completely lose their cool in under a week. Bonus points if there’s a Kennedy wedding, a new Broadway play, the Academy Awards, or anything vaguely similar scheduled.

Extra bonus points if the very next item on the agenda is an an education package, social security reform, or pretty much anything Teddy would vote for.

  2. The Democrats threaten a Senate shutdown with filibusters on everything. They should ask Newt Gingrich how well shutting down the government worked for him.

The Dems are either bluffing or very stupid. Maybe both.

  3. I’m just hoping this nuclear/constitutional thing gets over and done with soon, so people can quit debating over which annoying and misleading name to call it by.

That would just take the GOP stop trying to enforce its newspeak. Never would happen though.

  5. Frist should just call them up and force the Lefties hand.

Up or down vote that is all we want.

Will the Lefties like Chris Dodd have the fortitude to vote against Priscilla Owen and Janice Rogers Brown?

    Doubtful!

Either that, or it would just take the Party of the Ass to stop trying to enforce its newspeak. Any debate can be ended by one side folding.

What say we call it the no-filibuster option?

‘Nuclear option’ was bipartisan till it didn’t poll well. And some on the right continue to use it.

  8. I think you are wrong on a couple counts.

One is that I believe Frist may have been waiting for the right nominees to force this vote with. In Janice Brown and Priscilla Owen he has two very appealing nominees, hard for the public to hate or the MSM to villify.

My second observation can be stated easily, since when did you believe a story in the LA Times without independent verification?

So what? Bipartisan or no, it’s a stupid name for a parliamentary maneuver having nothing with nukes. I’m worried about Iran and North Korea using the nuclear option, but I lose no sleep over the end to judicial filibusters, or for that matter, and end to all filibusters, which I’ve never considered any better than a five year old throwing a temper tantrum.

Go bitch out Trent Lott. It seems like he’s the coiner of the phrase everyone uses and some people want to turn into un-words.

  11. Well, that explains a lot. After all, we all know Trent Lott would never say anything stupid. We wouldn’t have kept him on as Senate Majority Leader if he did.

Frist et al have been repeating him too. I wouldn’t mind if the right lost all its idiots
