Google Ads: Not Worth the Hassle

Filed under: Blogging Matters — Patterico @ 6:55 pm

I have had Google ads for several weeks now, and I think I’ve made a buck-fifty. It’s not worth the paperwork it will consume at tax time. They’re coming down.

Does anybody make money off of them?

  1. Yes…. Google does.

  2. I don’t have any ads, but I read a blog entry recently saying how great they were, so here it is:

  3. Good for you! The recent news about them backing Gore’s new TV venture finally made me drop Google Ads (details HERE)

I didn’t give up much. About $16 in four months.

  4. I’ve had google ads up for about 4 years, and have 60-something dollars. Can’t get a check until I hit $100, so I’ve got that going for me. Which is nice.

  5. I’ve averaged $3 a day or so off of them, but that’s on a site with something approaching 800 pages, almost all of which have the ads on them somewhere. Still, that’s meant a cheque from Google at least every two months, sometimes monthly. Can’t complain. (I did quite a bit better just before Christmas than I have since, BTW.)

  6. They do great for us on blogging.la and the other metroblogging.com sites

  7. Google doesn’t reveal how much of a cut of the revenue you actually get.

  8. Do viewers have to actually click on them to get you paid, or is it just a function of how often they load/display?

  9. Google Ads really needs to work on their keyword appropriateness algorithms. I was looking at some Iraqi guy’s blog the other day and there were these ads asking for donations to these charities for families of US Soldiers wounded in combat.

For readers who are Iraq citizens, that’s pretty tasteless.

The best blog designs give a clear concise presentation of the information. Those randsom-note-style animated laser light show Google Ads are inconsistent with that.

  10. See buzzmachine on the battle AFP has with google, and I mentioned this post.
