Quake

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:08 pm

There’s a quake — still going on as I write this.

UPDATE: Initial tremor was sudden, followed by gentler shaking. It lasted long enough for me to start and publish the above post — probably 10-15 seconds in all. I will post USGS information as it becomes available.

Anyone else local feel it?

UPDATE x2: According to USGS, the quake was quite small. A 2.9 magnitude quake, centered 1 mile SE of Encino. I was guessing it was small, but I figured it was closer.

  1. Patrick,

Didn’t feel it here in Thousand Oaks.

    Glad it was small!

  2. If you like to follow earthquakes, take a look at the USGS Earthquakes pages. There are regional maps just for California/Nevada, too. I bet you’ll find your quake (and a whole bunch more) there.

  3. Yeah, I already linked that in the post. Didn’t you see it?

  4. Oops! I missed it. Let me try to redeem myself with a link to the IRIS seismic monitor. It’s my favorite site for watching earthquakes worldwide.

  5. Feh. I was sitting here at my computer at the time, in Glendale, and I didn’t feel a thing. Usually, I feel even small temblors; if it were 2.9 at the epicenter in Encino (near Jerry’s Deli?), it must have been almost zero here!

  6. Didn’t feel a thing here in Santa Monica. When I moved out here from Indiana one of the things my mom told me was there are nasty earthquakes all the time. Shows what she knows, eh? 8^)

  7. Sounds similar to a recent experience– Had a 2.9 a couple of weeks ago that felt much stronger. That was because we were right near the epicenter and it wasn’t very deep. Rhe difference all that makes was very noticeable.
