Arlen Specter: Media Darling

Filed under: Judiciary — Patterico @ 6:48 am

It’s disgusting to watch the Washington Post fawning over Arlen Specter — even to the extent of praising his staff for popping the plastic tab on his coffee cup:

This may be the Specter conservatives feared — but it also seems like the chairman the committee (and the country) needs. The 75-year-old former district attorney — as he is so fond of reminding listeners — can be demanding and prickly: His aides are so well-trained that they not only arrive with notepad, water and coffee in tow but take care to break open the little plastic tab on the coffee cup so the senator doesn’t have to be bothered.

The love-fest continues today. Why all this praise? Because Sen. Specter is sounding weak about the “nuclear option.”

That may get him far with the editors of the Washington Post. But if Sen. Specter refuses to play ball at crunch time, he might well lose the support necessary to continue as the Judiciary Committee chairman.

Memo to Sen. Specter: if you lose the chairmanship, all this adulation will come to an abrupt end.

  1. Cut Sen. Specter free.

He needs to concentrate on his health and the Republican Senate Caucus needs one less RINO.

  2. They love him because he is, and has been for decades, strong pro abortion. Which is why he is not puting the judges on the fast track. He also thinks highly of the ACLU which the MSM agrees with. I read once he is against the Scouts, but have not seen this often enought to know if it is right. But he has supported the ACLU many times the last several years.

  3. I don’t see how the reference to Specter’s aides opening the tab on his coffee cup constitutes praise for his staff; it sounds more like a mild criticism of Specter (in an otherwise favorable article) that he doesn’t do such a simple thing himself.
