THE CURE FOR BIG GOVERNMENT

Filed under: Public Policy — Patterico @ 6:20 am

You want the cure for big government?

No more withholding.

As it is, people don’t feel as though the money that is being withheld is really theirs. It’s like they never got it in the first place — because they didn’t.

Under my regime, it wouldn’t be that way.

Under my regime, every pay period you would personally set aside the amount of money you will need to save up for the eventual tax bill. Come April 15, you would take out your checkbook and write a huge check to the federal government — for thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars.

You think you might start thinking twice about what they’re doing with your money then?

It’s worse than that. There are people who actually don’t realize they are paying income tax at all. They think their refund check is free money from the government.

I did just what you outlined, it’s called a 1099.

  3. And, Hugo? Were you pleased to write that check?

Everyone should have to do it this way.

  4. No I wasn’t, I only earned 12,000 that year, I hoped that the money would not go towards something goofy. I had barely enough left over to go to Japan and have a date with my then gal, now my wife. I guess my moolah went to great public works and not so great purchases. I thought twice about what they were doing with my money. I found out that fiat money and a credit based economy can make things more expensive than I thought.
